Hunter College School of Social Work, the City University of New York

Identity: The primary goal of the program is to prepare students for responsible, advanced, and creative practice in social work. As the only public graduate school of social work in New York City, the School recognizes a special responsibility toward serving the urban community under social agency auspices.

The School of Social Work adheres to the principle that education for social work proceeds from a common core of values and knowledge incorporated into social work practice. The School aims to bring into the profession graduates who are able to make responsible decisions and value choices in a rapidly changing society. The M.S.W. curriculum at the Hunter College School of Social Work reflects a commitment to social change, diversity, and practice in the urban environment.

Hours: a minimum of 60 credits; semester system; generally 3 credit courses (occasionally 2-4 credits). Two-credit elective courses meet for 10 weeks. Three-credit required courses meet for 15 weeks.

Pre Reqs: Bachelor's degree; demonstration of a liberal arts background.

Program Structures: Full time (2 years; classes 2 days/week, practicum 3 days/week); Part time/extended program (3-4 years; minimum 2 courses per semester); Advanced Standing program (summer and 2 semesters); Three-Two Program (joint BA/MSW). One year residence program: Individuals are eligible to apply if they have completed a minimum of two years of full-time successful employment in a recognized social welfare institution and their current social welfare employer agrees to provide them with an internship approved by the school in their second year in the program. Students are permitted to take up to 30 hours of course work on a part-time basis while remaining in full-time employment. The program is usually completed in 5 semesters including summer work and an academic year in residence. The total field instruction requirement is completed in the residence year. Usually the field practicum takes place in the agency in which the student has been employed.

Foundation Requirements: The foundation curriculum includes Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Social Welfare Policy and Services, Foundations of Social Work Practice, Practice Methods (e.g., casework, group work, community organizing, and administration), Social Research, and the Field Practicum. The development of competence in one or more of the practice methods (administration, casework, community organization, or group work) is expected.

Required courses over full program (foundation & concentration): Social Welfare Policy & Services I & II; Human Behavior and the Social Environment I, II & III; Social Research I (or Advanced Research); Social Research II; Administration of Social Agencies; Foundations of Social Work Practice; Major Method I, II & III; Required Minor Method I (II Optional); Fourth Semester Required Method or Practice Elective; Professional Seminar; Two Free Electives at two credits each; field practicum.

Concentrations: 4 social work practice methods: Casework; Group Work; Community Organization and Planning; Administration. All students are required to choose a major method in which they wish to concentrate, and to take at least one course in a method other than the major. In addition, students may select advanced courses which focus on specific social problems, populations, specialized skills or institutional auspices. Thus, courses are offered on children's services, aging, substance abuse, social work in health care, mental health, school social work, occupational social work, social work in the criminal justice system, and family treatment.

Practicum: 3 days per week.

Electives: 2 free electives (2 credits each).

Specialization Options: Geriatric social work.
